Teaching

I aim to give my pupils a rounded musical education: lessons include exploring various genres of music, improvisation and ensemble playing alongside the continual development of instrumental technique. Currently, I offer home tuition and as such travel to the pupil’s home. For both clarinet and saxophone lessons, the rate charged is 30 euros an hour.

Many prospective pupils choose to have a starter/taster lesson (usually 30 minutes long). During these, the pupil is given an introduction to the instrument which should help them to decide whether the instrument is suitable for them. A starter/taster lesson costs 10 euros.

The length and frequency of lessons can be tailored for the individual student. Prospective pupils can choose either weekly or fortnightly lessons, or if necessary, pupils can arrange lessons as and when is convenient for them. Similarly, students can choose the length of their lessons, and may wish to increase the lesson length as they progress.

For those pupils wishing to take graded music exams, I am familiar with both the Trinity and ABRSM syllabi, and have a 100% pass rate. I can also accompany my students where possible. I have a CRB check and am also a member of the Musicians’ Union.

Recorder and Theory
Although music theory is an integral part of learning an instrument, I am available to teach pure music theory. Very young children may find it easier to learn the descant recorder before moving on to the larger woodwind instruments. The rate for recorder and theory tution is 24 euros per hour and 30 minute lessons are recommended.

……….….….

At the moment, I only teach using English. However, I would be happy to exchange instrumental lessons for French or Dutch lessons. Please contact me for further details.

Equipment and material
All budding musicians will need a music stand to put their music on – stands of various colours can be purchased at any good music shop! Clarinet and saxophone pupils will usually start on 1½ strength reeds, and they also will need a cleaner or a pull-through and cork grease (if the instrument doesn’t come with them). I usually ask pupils to provide a notebook for homework and other notes. Some recommended beginners’ material is shown below:

Abracadabra Clarinet with CD ed. Jonathon Rutland
40 Studies for Modern Clarinet by James Rae
